Q: Can I use an existing WhatsApp number for Voice calls?

Existing WhatsApp numbers cannot be used directly for Voice calls in the current setup.

To use one number for both WhatsApp and Voice calls, you can either:

  1. Purchase a new Twilio number and register it for WhatsApp
  2. Port your existing WhatsApp number to Twilio, if porting is available for your country or region

Option 1: Purchase a new Twilio number, then register it for WhatsApp

You can first purchase a voice-enabled phone number through Twilio, then register that number as a WhatsApp sender.

This is usually the easiest option because the number is already managed in Twilio and can support Voice calls. Twilio also supports registering a WhatsApp sender using a Twilio-owned number, either through Self Sign-up in the Twilio Console or through the Senders API.

Use this option if:

  • You want to use one number for both WhatsApp and Voice calls
  • You have not registered the number as a WhatsApp Business number yet

Option 2: Move your existing WhatsApp number to Twilio

If you already use a WhatsApp Business number and want to use the same number for Voice calls, the number needs to be managed in Twilio first.

Before you start

Migrating a WhatsApp number may affect your existing WhatsApp setup. In some cases, you may need to delete the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business App account linked to the number, or create a new WABA in Twilio. Review Twilio’s Help Center article before starting the process.

If your number is currently used in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business App, you may need to delete the existing WhatsApp account before registering the number with Twilio.

If your number is registered with another WhatsApp Business Platform provider or Solution Partner, you may need to migrate the number to Twilio. Before migration, make sure:

  • Your Meta Business Portfolio is active and verified
  • Your WABA is approved and has a valid payment method
  • Two-factor authentication is turned off for the phone number in WhatsApp Manager

During registration, you should select your existing Meta Business Portfolio and create a new WABA in Twilio. Selecting a different Meta Business Portfolio or WABA may cause the registration to fail.

Porting availability depends on the country or region of the phone number.

Country / region Porting availability
United States Can be submitted through the Twilio Console. Refer to Twilio Help Center
Brazil Can be submitted through Twilio’s porting form. Refer to Twilio Help Center

Important notes about porting a number

Before porting an existing WhatsApp number, check the following:

  • Whether the number can be ported in the country or region
  • Whether the number can support Voice call
  • Whether there are additional Twilio requirements or fees
  • Whether porting may affect your current WhatsApp setup

Porting timelines, requirements, and availability may vary depending on the country, number type, and provider.
